Posey pitches Sumter past Camden 8-3 in Spring Break tourney

CAMDEN - Seth Posey tossed six innings of shutout baseball to lift the Sumter High School varsity team to an 8-3 victory over North Central on Wednesday in the Camden High School Spring Break Tournament at the CHS field.

Posey allowed just three hits in picking up the win while striking out five and walking two.

Sebastian DuCom and Wylie Coker both went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Gamecock offense. Drake Thames was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Jackson Hoshour had a triple, scored two runs and stole two bases, while Victor Brown Tray Yates and Jacob Holladay both had a hit, a run and an RBI. Yates and Kieran Hagerty also stole two bases apiece.

Laurence Manning 16

Colleton Prep 9

MANNING - Laurence Manning improved to 9-1-1 on the season with a 16-9 junior varsity softball win over Colleton Prep on Wednesday at Julie Skolar Field.

Gracyn Nalley was 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead LMA. LB Brogdon and Malorie Spiegel both went 3-for-5 as well.

Spiegel picked up the win, striking out eight in going the distance.

Manning-Santee meeting April 28

Manning-Santee American Legion Post 68 will hold an organizational meeting for both its Junior and Senior baseball teams on Sunday, April 28.

The meeting will begin at 3 p.m. and will be held at the American Legion hut located at 552 Sunset Drive in Manning.

P-15's organizational meeting April 25

The Sumter American Legion Post 15 baseball program will have an organizational meeting on Thursday, April 25.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the American Legion home on Artillery Drive.

All potential players for both the junior and senior teams are asked to bring their birth certificates.

Gamecock Club meeting May 7

University of South Carolina football head coach Will Muschamp will be the featured speaker at the Sumter County Gamecock Club Annual Banquet on Tuesday, May 7, at Sumter County Civic Center.

Other speakers are expected to be at the meeting as well. Dinner will be served from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. and the program will begin at 7.

There will also be a silent auction for different kinds of Gamecock gear.

Sponsorship packages are available for $115, which includes four tickets to the banquet and complimentary advertising. Additional tickets are $25 each.

Tickets for non-sponsors are $30 each and can be purchased from any Gamecock Club board member or at Danny's Trophy Shop at 713 Bultman Drive, C.W. Ard Appliances at 21 West Wesmark Boulevard, or the Sumter Board of Realtors at 26 East Liberty Street.

Clemson Prowl & Growl May 2

Head football coach Dabo Swinney and men's basketball head coach Brad Brownell will be the guest speakers at Clemson's Prowl & Growl in Florence at Florence Center on May 2.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. Dinner will be held at 5:45 with the program starting at 6:30.

Tickets are $25 a person and a table, which is reserved for eight, is $300.

US to play exhibition vs Venezuela on June 9 in Cincinnati

CHICAGO - The United States will play Venezuela at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium on June 9 in the Americans' final exhibition before defending their title in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The match, announced Thursday, is the Americans' first game in Cincinnati and is likely to be the second of two friendlies for the Americans ahead of the tournament, the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The U.S. opens the Gold Cup against Guyana on June 18 at St. Paul, Minnesota, the first competitive match for the Americans in 20 months since their loss at Trinidad and Tobago caused them to miss the 2018 World Cup. The U.S. will play T&T on June 22 at Cleveland and complete Group D against Panama on June 26 at Kansas City, Kansas.
