Vascular disease of the vein affects millions of people throughout the U.S. each year and is often a factor in the development of chronic, non-healing wounds. Vascular disease - including peripheral artery disease - also contributes to 80 percent of all non-traumatic limb amputations each year.

Because of these staggering numbers, the Wound Healing Center at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital is committed to providing a more comprehensive care experience for patients living with vascular disease and chronic wounds.

Vein care is especially important for patients with limited mobility or transportation issues.

The new program will be led by Michael Naylor, M.D., a vascular surgeon with the Sumter Surgical team.

Robyn Boan, program director, said, "We are excited that our Wound Healing Center now offers our community conveniently located, advanced, minimally invasive laser vein treatment. This will give many patients the ability to heal faster and prevent future wounds."

The Prisma Health Tuomey Vein Care program offers advanced, minimally invasive laser treatment in an outpatient setting. Better treatment will give many patients with venous leg ulcers the ability to heal faster and may even prevent future ulcers.

Vein care includes:

- Venous reflux screening;

- Endovenous laser treatment; and

- Duplex ultrasound.

Vein ablation services are now being offered in addition to a number of other leading-edge treatments including negative pressure wound therapy, total contact casting, bio-engineered tissues, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, biosynthetic dressings and growth factor therapies.
