Funeral services for Raymond Durant Jr. will be held on Saturday at Olden Chapel UME Church, 189 Hoyt St., Sumter, with Pastor Denzel J. Hampton officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Sumter.

The public viewing will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter, with a visitation in the evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Olden Chapel UME Church, Sumter.

Raymond Durant Jr. was born on March 2, 1963, in Sumter, a son of Peggy Dickerson Durant and the late Raymond Durant Sr. He departed this life on Friday, May 19, 2023, at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, Columbia.

Raymond dedicated his life to Christ at Olden Chapel Union Methodist Episcopal (UME) Church. He attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Sumter High School in the Class of 1981. He earned an associate degree in electrical installation and maintenance and was certified in electronic servicing technology from Central Carolina Technical College in 1984. Raymond served as an electronics technician and as a manufacturing technician at Becton Dickinson from 1984 until his retirement in 2014.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dr. Ivy Milissa Durant; maternal grandparent, Susan T. Dickerson; paternal grandparents, Ben James Durant and Carrie H. Durant; two aunts; and six uncles.

Survivors are his loving mother, Peggy J. Durant of Sumter; two sisters, Tonji M. Durant PhD of Tucker, Georgia, and Daisy Green (Preston) Baxter of Thomasville, North Carolina; three brothers, Anthony Green of Atlanta, Ray Kennedy and Tommy (Shirley) Kennedy, both of Thomasville; two aunts; two uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends.
