Rembert man arrested after Monday car chase with his child in vehicle
A Rembert man was charged with child endangerment and failure to stop for a blue light after he reportedly led Sumter deputies on a car chase on Monday.
Travon Antonio Williams, 26, of Mood Road, tried to avoid stopping at a checkpoint on North St. Pauls Church Road at China Lane and fled with his child in the back seat of his Volkswagen, according to a news release from Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
Williams reportedly stopped the vehicle in a yard before reaching the checkpoint and turned around to drive in the opposite direction, and a deputy in a marked patrol vehicle tried to stop the suspect with blue lights and siren. After two stop sticks on Loring Mill Road flattened the two passenger side tires but failed to stop the suspect, he stopped his vehicle at a Crowndale Drive residence and was arrested.
Deputies found a male child in the car who was unseen during the chase. The smell of marijuana reportedly was coming from the vehicle, and suspected marijuana was found on the driver's side floorboard of the vehicle. It was taken into evidence, and Williams was taken to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center without incident and charged, according to the release.
