A man Sumter police say is transient has been arrested in connection to at least seven break-ins at downtown businesses in the past two weeks that accumulated a combined value of $31,000.

David Bernard Rose, 47, was apprehended without incident Wednesday night following a break-in at a Liberty Street business, according to Sumter Police Department Public Information Officer Tonyia McGirt. He faces four counts of breaking and entering an automobile, four counts of second-degree violent burglary, one county of malicious injury to personal property and two counts of grand larceny.

He was also charged with possession of burglary tools, which officers found at the time of his arrest shortly after the Liberty Street break-in.

Rose, a repeat offender who was on probation at the time of these reported crimes, is connected to at least six other break-ins at downtown businesses since June 12, she said. Property valued together at more than $31,000, including vehicles and utility trailers, has been stolen.

He is being held without bond in the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. McGirt said an investigation is ongoing.
