Funeral services for Rhunetta Dupree Pitts will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Union Station AME Church, 945 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Phil Flowers officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

The public may view from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, Sumter.

Mrs. Pitts will be placed in the church at noon on Thursday for further viewing until the hour of service.

Rhunetta Dupree Pitts, wife of Samuel Pitts, transitioned on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at Palmetto Health Tuomey.

She was a daughter of the late Leon and Annie L. Pearson Dupree. Rhunetta was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Lincoln High School Class of 1957. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Morris College, a Master's Degree in education from the University of South Carolina and later received certification as an education specialist.

Rhunetta's service to the community in education spanned 33 years. She taught at Savage Glover Elementary, Millwood Elementary and rendered service to Sumter School District 17, until retirement in 1995. After four years, she returned to the classroom in Lee County. Mrs. Pitts was committed to serving the children in our community by tutoring, volunteering and assisting parents with childcare.

Rhunetta was a faithful lifelong member of Union Station AME Church. As a committed member, she served in many capacities to include choir member, usher board, the ACE League (YPD), the Steward Board, Vacation Bible School teacher and as president of the Gardenia Brogdon Women's Missionary Society.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel Leon (Len) Pitts and Karl Stuart Pitts; and one sister, Darnella Dupree McCants.

Survivors include her husband, Samuel Pitts; a son, Rodney Rydell Pitts of Sumter; a daughter, Denise Pitts (Samuel) Addison of Charlotte, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas, Moriah, Rodney and Miranda; one sister, Mae Dupree Meggie of Sumter; daughter-in-law, Jere Daniels Pitts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
