ROBERT CORNELL PRINGLE

Posted

Robert Cornell Pringle was born on March 27, 1922, in Sumter, to the late Ada Pringle and Robert Witherspoon. He was the apple of his late grandmother, Fannie Pringle's eye.

Affectionately known as Cornell, he received his education in the Sumter County public school system. At the age of 21, Cornell entered in the U.S. Army from January 1943 until December 1945, faithfully serving his country in World War II. Cornell moved to Washington, D.C., where he was employed by the federal government at the Pentagon for a number of years. He later returned to Sumter after his retirement. He was a very generous and caring person and would assist anyone in time of need. Cornell was an avid card player and enjoyed playing cards with his friends whenever the opportunity presented itself, but especially on Friday nights. He and his partner, Arvel Langley, were the Bid Whist Champs.

Cornell was a loyal member of First Baptist Missionary Church for more than 50 years, where he was a member of the gospel choir and mass choir. He served faithfully until his health no longer allowed him to attend church services in person.

He departed this life on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

Cornell leaves to cherish his memory: a very close friend, Arvel Langley; a devoted cousin, Mary (William) Allen; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A special thanks to Deacon Bertie Blanding, Williemae Murdock, Jamie Pack and Ruth Watson for their devoted assistance throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his favorite uncle, Thomas (Eunice) Pringle; aunts, Lottie Pringle, Pearl (Wadell) Mack and Emma (Horace) Jackson; and his favorite cousin, Vermell (James) Harvin.
