Posted

Roberta A. Carter, 72, beloved wife of 50 years to John L. Carter Sr., was born on Feb. 6, 1947, the youngest of five girls born to the late John and Vermell H. Amos. She was called home at 12:50 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019, in the comfort of her own home surrounded by her beloved family.

Roberta treasured her years as an educator, where she began her career at Stone Hill Elementary School. She spent most of her career as a teacher of Special Education at Alice Drive Middle School and completed her teaching career at Willow Drive Elementary School, where she received "Teacher of the Year" in 1991. Roberta retired from Sumter School District 17 after 31 years of exemplary service. Among her long list of accomplishments, Roberta was an alumna of Morris College, obtaining her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.

All while being a remarkable educator, mother and wife, Roberta tirelessly volunteered her time and service to United Ministries, Special Olympics and St. Jude Catholic Church, where she had been a dedicated member for more than 30 years. She served as Grand Lady of the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary for several consecutive years as well as becoming a member of the 4th Degree Ladies of Grace. Roberta was a great influence and a fierce advocate for placement of the Somali Bantu people who faced adversity and displacement from their homes. She assisted in the fight to provide the displaced families with a new beginning to thrive.

Roberta leaves behind to cherish her memory: the love of her life and husband, John L. Carter Sr; two wonderful children, John (Monica) Lorenzo Jr. and Candace (Fernando) Camille Peoples; two beautiful grandchildren, Diamond Monique and Kristal Janaida; a beloved sister, Wilma Royster; a very special niece, Cheryl (Grover) A. Duren; a doting caretaker, Janie Burgess; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
