Ruth Madeline Thurman Hoyt, age 99, beloved wife of the late Col. Robert F. Hoyt Sr., died on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021.

Born in Covington, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late John F. and Anna Belle Pleasant Thurman. Ms. Hoyt graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing from The Portsmouth General Hospital School of Nursing. She served as a flight nurse in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Ruth was a lifetime member of the Rose Douglas, Chapter 475, of the Eastern Star in Wichita, Kansas. She was active in the Shaw Air Force Base Officers Wives Club. She went on to work as a nurse at Campbell Soup for many years. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and was a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class. She loved sharing her love of quilting and was an active member of the Swan Lake Quilting Guild. She delighted in the creating of porcelain dolls, China painting and jewelry making. Ruth was a natural leader and teacher. She introduced adult coloring at Morningside. Each new female resident received a hand-beaded pearl necklace from her at Morningside. Her very infectious smile, blue eyes and laugh made all who met her never forget her.

Surviving are her children, Dr. Robert Franklin Hoyt Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Maryland and Linda Hoyt Williams and her husband, John, of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Courtney Thurman Riese, Branston Wagner Williams, Robert Franklin Hoyt III, Jessica Hoyt Gibson and Allison Brooke Hoyt; nine great-grandchildren, Owen Matthew Riese, Sarah Katherine Williams, Hannah Ruth Williams, Blair Victoria Gibson and Cassidy Elizabeth Gibson; and one sister, Esther Hunter and her husband, Elva.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Richard Allen Hoyt.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. The Rev. Laura Whitt and the Rev. David Day officiated. Interment will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
