SAMUEL ELLISON

Posted

Samuel Ellison was born on Jan. 8, 1933, in Summerton, the sixth of 10 children to the union of Johnny and Jannie Ellison. He was called home on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019.

Sam, as he was affectionately called by many, and "Uncle Sammy" by his nephews and nieces, accepted Christ at an early age. Being a member of Union Station AME Church, he showed much commitment while serving as a trustee and choir member. With just an 11th grade education, he mastered everything he put his hands to do. Sam was a brick mason, plumber and a carpenter. There was nothing he could not build or was afraid to try, but mostly he was a master in touching people's hearts and making them laugh. If it wasn't his kind words of wisdom then it was his endless generosity that affected most people, countless times doing work for people and charging them little to nothing at all. Sam work for more than 20 years at Tastykake Baking Co. in Philadelphia, retiring more than 25 years ago. Along with his devoted wife of 65 years, Ida Mae Ellison, Sam then moved back to Sumter, where they lived out the rest of their blessed life together.

Samuel leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Ida Mae Ellison; four children, Clara (Ricky), Kenneth, and twins Alfred (Denise) and Alfreda (Marvin); five grandchildren, Erica, Brandon, Quentin, Quincy and Jerrell; five sisters, Vashtie, Mary, Ruth, Mattie and Jannie; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, all of whom join the family in sharing the grief caused by his departure, but rejoice that he is resting with the Lord.

He was preceded in death by a son, Sam Jr.; two brothers, Henry and Sylvester; and two sisters, Francis and Carrie.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.
