Funeral services for Samuel Pitts will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Union Station A.M.E. Church, 945 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Phil Flowers officiating and the Rev. Dr. Friendly Gadson as eulogist. Interment will follow in the Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

The public may view today at Palmer Memorial Chapel from 3 to 8 p.m., and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Mr. Pitts will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Thursday for further viewing until the hour of service.

Samuel Pitts, 83, died Friday, June 21, 2019, at Sumter Health and Rehabilitation. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Clayborn and Fannie Milligan Pitts. He was the husband of the late Rhunetta Dupree Pitts. Samuel was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from St. Michael High School. He was employed by Nu-Idea Supply Co., Sumter Department of Transportation and Carolina Furniture Company.

Samuel began his Christian journey at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. After marriage, he joined Union Station A.M.E. and served in many capacities to include trustee, trustee pro-tem, class leader, male chorus, chaplain of the Union Station Sons of Allen and the Sumter District Sons of Allen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rhunetta Dupree Pitts; two sons, Samuel Leon "Len" Pitts and Karl Stuart Pitts; seven brothers, Herbert, Cornell, Lewis, Elijah, Clayborn, Marion and Howard; and five sisters, Julia Hutlin, Rachel Harvin, Elizabeth Frierson, Maria Gooden and Naomi Walker.

Survivors include his son, Rodney Rydell Pitts of Sumter; a daughter, Denise Pitts (Samuel) Addison of Charlotte, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas, Moriah, Rodney and Miranda; four brothers: Albert of Indiana, Ernest (Clara) of Maryland, and James (Bernice) and Ervin (Lottie), both of Sumter; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
