S.C. DSS honors case manager from Clarendon

The South Carolina Department of Social Services' Employee of the Month programs recognizes staff whose work exemplifies our core principles: Competence, Courage and Compassion. Nicole Dow-Myers, Adult Protective Services Case Manager with Richland County DSS, was recently selected as an October Employee of the Month. "When I got the email, I was shocked," she said. "I read the email several times and was still in disbelief. I am truly grateful for this acknowledgement."

Originally from Clarendon County, her job includes assessing reports of vulnerable adults for abuse, neglect and exploitation and then providing appropriate care if required. In a typical day, Dow-Myers receive new reports, conduct home visits to ensure the safety and well-being of the vulnerable adults and documents all actions.

Her nomination states Dow-Myers "is very passionate about the APS clients she serves. She is always thorough and displays a conscientious effort to do her job in the appropriate manner and always follows through with her cases as directed. Even though Nicole encounters a large number of complex cases, she is able to work through these critical situations and always provides detailed information. She is a hard-working young lady and a team player. Nicole is constantly looking for ways to improve herself and continuously looks for resources to assist her clients."

Dow-Myers said her approach has always been to treat her clients with the dignity and respect they deserve.

"I love working with my adult clients," she said. "It does my heart good to see my clients smile knowing I have help them in way that makes their lives better. In my clients' faces, I see the faces of my family, and I am prayerful that someone will touch their lives in a way that is good.

"I equally enjoy working with individuals who share the same passion I have when it comes to helping people. Networking has taught me many things. The knowledge and experience gained has made me better equipped to help my clients."

Staff selected as part of the Employee of the Month Program are awarded lunch with the acting State Director along with other honorees, a dedicated parking space, a photo and write-up displayed at State Office and a write-up sent to their community newspaper.
