The South Carolina Supreme Court came to Sumter on Thursday to hear oral arguments at Patriot Hall. Chief Justice Donald W. Beatty told the crowd it is important for the public to see and understand their government institutions. The Supreme Court has made plans to hear oral arguments next in Horry and Spartanburg counties, he said. Along with Beatty were Associate Justices John W. Kittredge, Kaye G. Hearn, John Cannon Few and George C. "Buck" James Jr., far right, who grew up in Sumter. After the justices heard oral arguments in three cases, they enjoyed a luncheon hosted by the Third Circuit Solicitor's Office and the Public Defender's Office.
