SCENT expands services, moves to new location on Wesmark

The office for Sumter's only private ear, nose and throat specialist has moved into a larger facility to better accommodate customers and expand its services.

Joan Duerr, chief marketing officer with SCENT Allergy and Sleep Medicine, spoke this week about the practice moving down the street from 26 Wesmark Court to 410 W. Wesmark Blvd., the former home of Sumter Urological Associates.

Duerr said ENT doctors are specialists for patients who suffer from chronic sinus issues or have trouble breathing while sleeping, swallowing difficulties and ringing in the ears, among other issues associated with the ear, nose, throat, head and neck.

About 60% or more of their patients come from referring doctors, such as general practitioners, dentists and pediatricians, she said.

"We do receive a lot of business from other doctors who just don't have the training to get into someone's sinus cavity and really figure out why they have chronic sinusitis or why they have trouble breathing while they're sleeping," Duerr said.

The move to the new location in early September doubles the number of examination rooms for the practice and will allow for the addition of a sleep lab and CT scanner, according to Duerr. The office now offers full ENT and allergy services and a walk-in clinic for adults and children.

SCENT has eight offices in the greater Midlands region and has had a site in Sumter since spring 2017.

Currently, the Sumter office is open four days per week (Monday through Thursday), but Duerr said she expects the operation to expand to five days as its increases capacity and grows. Two ENTs work out of the location - Dr. Brian Boone and Dr. Macy Vidrine - as do other providers, such as an audiologist and audiologist technician for hearing evaluations, a surgery scheduler and an allergy technician for allergy shots.

"We have a very nice team of specialists and medical community," Duerr said, "that makes us well-rounded when dealing with your ears, nose and throat issues."
