Johnny Hilton, a district school board member and chairman of the Barry Leach Memorial Scholarship Fund, distributed information on the Barry Leach Memorial Scholarship Fund this week.
A former science teacher at Millwood for 23 years, Leach passed away in September 2000 from cancer. In 2001, the faculty and staff at Millwood established the scholarship fund in his honor.
"We know of no better way to honor Barry Leach, who dedicated his life to helping others learn, than to provide scholarship assistance for students planning to further their education," Hilton said.
According to Hilton, scholarship applications are now available in the guidance offices at the district's three high schools - Sumter High, Crestwood and Lakewood. Applications must be postmarked no later than March 29.
For this school year, a $1,000 college scholarship will be awarded to a senior graduating from one of the high schools who attended Millwood.
The Barry Leach Memorial Scholarship Fund is tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) as a public charity, he said. All gifts and donations to the scholarship fund are tax deductible.
Donations to the scholarship fund can be mailed to P.O. Box 312, Sumter, SC 29151, and checks should be made payable to the Barry Leach Memorial Scholarship Fund. The employer identification number is 80-0826329.
