Semifinal matchups for Hines Furniture Athlete of Year set

Voting for the semifinal round of The Sumter Item Hines Furniture Athlete of the Year began on Thursday with Thomas Sumter Academy boys cross country runner Josh Fugate going up against Sumter High School girls swimmer Hayden Kirkhart and Wilson Hall girls shooter Ann Weathers Blankenship facing Crestwood High boys soccer

Voting for the third round concluded on Wednesday. More than 3,500 votes were cast from Monday through midnight on Wednesday to help narrow the list of athletes remaining to just four.

Following are the results from the third round:

Josh Fugate / Boys Cross Country, Thomas Sumter Academy - 2,975 votes (83.8%)

Zach Davis / Boys Archery, Thomas Sumter Academy - 577 votes (16.2%)

Hayden Kirkhart / Girls Swimming, Sumter High School - 2,867 votes (80.7%)

Santana Christmas / Girls Bowling, Robert E. Lee Academy - 685 votes (19.3%)

Christian Acevedo / Boys Soccer, Crestwood High School - 1,977 votes (55.7%)

Miller Jones / Boys Golf, Wilson Hall - 1,575 votes (44.3%)

Ann Weathers Blankenship / Girls Shooting, Wilson Hall - 2,190 votes (61.7%)

Jasiah Pack / Girls Soccer, Sumter High School - 1,362 votes (38.3%)

Voting for the semifinals will end at midnight on Sunday. Fans can visit to cast their votes in both semifinal matchups.

The initial seeding for the bracket was selected at random.

The semifinal winners will advance to the championship round, which begins on Monday and runs through Thursday, Aug. 15. The champion will be announced in the Saturday, Aug. 17, edition of The Sumter Item as well as online.
