Shigeko Wetherington, 96, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, best friend, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025.
Born on Nov. 24, 1928, in Aomori, Japan, Shigeko was the daughter of the late Chosaburo Esoshima, and the wife of the late Ira Thomas Wetherington.
Shigeko was a long-standing member of the SGI Buddhist Community and resided in Sumter, South Carolina, for over 45 years. She was very selfless, compassionate and a cherished friend to many. Shigeko enjoyed karaoke singing and spending time with family and friends. She will be forever remembered for her loving nature and wisdom.
She is survived by her son, Gary Wetherington, and his wife, Lisa Wetherington, of Dawsonville, Georgia; grandchildren, Allison Wetherington of Marietta, Georgia, and Scott Wetherington and his wife, Sarah Wetherington, of Pensacola, Florida. She has four great-grandchildren, Maddison, Hailey, Landon and Harrison.
Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at the SGI South Carolina Buddhist Center, 228-B O’Neil Court, Columbia, South Carolina, 29223.
