As a member of this community for many years, I have witnessed the profound impact that small, collective contributions can make toward our shared goals. The upcoming Penny for Progress Sales Tax Referendum provides an opportunity for each of us to invest in the safety, well-being and future growth of Sumter County. With one cent added to every dollar spent, we can enhance vital services, improve infrastructure and provide modern recreational facilities, all without placing an additional burden on property owners.
This proposed penny sales tax will fund projects critical to our community, including upgrades for emergency services, improvements to public parks and infrastructure development that will support our families and businesses. For instance, new fire trucks and EMS ambulances, updated park facilities and road enhancements throughout the county are some of the planned projects that will make Sumter a safer and more vibrant place to live. Additionally, revitalizing spaces like the South Sumter Gym and expanding parks will ensure that all citizens have access to quality community resources and recreational activities.
This tax will also spread the responsibility, as approximately one-third of the tax contributions are expected to come from non-residents who use our roads, visit our parks and rely on local resources. Voting "yes" to this referendum on Nov. 5 isn't just about today; it's about making a meaningful investment for the next generation of Sumter residents.
Let us come together as one community to support this initiative. Our small contributions will collectively bring significant improvements, helping Sumter to thrive for years to come.
