South Carolina adds John Scott Jr. as defensive line coach

Posted

COLUMBIA (AP) - South Carolina has hired former NFL assistant John Scott Jr. as its defensive line coach.

The school announced the hire Tuesday after his one-year, $435,000 contract was approved by university trustees.

Scott takes over for Lance Thompson, who was let go by the Gamecocks after three seasons.

Scott spent two seasons on the defensive staff of the New York jets in 2015-16. He was a quality control assistant the first season before becoming a defensive line assistant the next year.

Reds acquire Gray from Yankees

CINCINNATI - Sonny Gray knows what he's getting into even before he arrives in Cincinnati.

His father tried out for the Reds and failed to make the cut, but remained a huge fan. Gray attended his first major league game at Great American Ball Park, and he knows about the town's affinity for a unique style of chili.

Gray agreed to a trade from the Yankees anyway, along with a $38 million, four-year contract adding $30.5 million in guaranteed money from 2020-22.

The deal announced Monday includes a $12 million club option for 2023 that could increase the value to $50 million for five seasons and has additional performance bonuses for innings and escalators.

Former NFL player McFadden

arrested in Texas on DWI charge

DALLAS - Authorities say former NFL player Darren McFadden has posted bond after he was arrested on a drunken-driving charge when he fell asleep in the drive-thru lane at a fast-food restaurant in suburban Dallas.

Collin County court records show the 31-year-old was charged with driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest after being found early Monday at a Whataburger in McKinney. McFadden was taken to the county jail.

Ronaldo pleads guilty to

tax fraud at Madrid court

MADRID - Cristiano Ronaldo has pleaded guilty to tax fraud and received a two-year suspended sentence.

The Juventus forward, who was facing charges stemming from his days at Real Madrid, was in court for about 45 minutes and signed an agreement which will cost him nearly 19 million euros ($21.6 million) in fines.

Ronaldo arrived at court in a black van and was wearing a black sports coat and black pants. He walked up some stairs leading to the court house and even stopped to sign an autograph.

Ronaldo made the deal to plead guilty with Spain's state prosecutor and tax authorities last year.

In Spain, a judge can suspend sentences for two years or less for first-time offenders.

In 2017, a state prosecutor accused Ronaldo of four counts of tax fraud from 2011-14 worth 14.7 million euros ($16.7 million). Ronaldo was accused of having used shell companies outside Spain to hide income made from image rights.
