Stand-up comedy show in Sumter will offer free health screenings

An event at the Sumter County Civic Center next weekend will combine stand-up comedy with health care awareness and prevention screenings.

The Healthy Laughter Comedy Tour will start at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, with free health screenings provided by Prisma Health followed by a panel discussion at 4 p.m. It all leads up to the comedy show featuring Akintunde at 6 p.m.

Akintunde, an award-winning comedian, actor, writer and radio personality who can be seen on BET, TBN, TBS, The World Network, Showtime at the Apollo and the feature film "Hav Faith," is coming from a tour kick-off in Atlanta, Spartanburg and Savannah. Tour producers have a goal to reach more than 1,000 with free health screenings and health care information on the Sumter stop. He is a 25-year comedy veteran and speaker, having written more than 350 original TV episodes, according to a news release. He has written for the NAACP Image Awards and is the host of two nationally syndicated radio shows, "Sundays Radio Show" and "Laugh of the Day."

The full tour line-up also features Nikita B, Corie Johnson and Rod of God.

A limited number of free show tickets will be available for those who receive screenings. On-site screenings will include blood sugar, with results mailed to patrons, BMI, prostate exams and blood pressure.
