Sumter Adult Education won five prestigious awards at South Carolina Adult Education Fall Institute, a testament to the incredible work being done by its dedicated faculty, staff and students. These honors highlight the program's commitment to enhancing the educational opportunities and success rates for adult learners in the Sumter community.
Among the awards received, Sumter Adult Education earned the highly sought-after Innovation Award, recognizing the innovative programs and services designed to increase retention, superior instruction and graduation rates. This award reflects the transformative work being done in Sumter to ensure that students not only succeed, but also thrive.
In the past year, 99 students earned their GED or high school diploma, generating an estimated $21 million economic impact to the Sumter community. Additionally, Sumter Adult Education has helped more than 352 students obtain a workforce credential, skills upgrade or other educational service. This accomplishment is a clear indication of the program's role in driving positive change within the community.
Sumter Adult Education is also proud to have one of the highest numbers of diploma students in the state and the highest concentration of high school diploma students for a program of its size.
Dr. Abigail Busby-Webb, a key leader in the program, shared, "We truly offer a 24-hour online high school diploma program. I'm constantly responding to students and encouraging them to ensure they are successful. Fifty-two of the 99 graduates last academic year actually received their high school diploma, the same state-recognized credential as any other student."
Another significant achievement was Sumter Adult Education's win in the Integrated Education and Training Program category. This program allows students to earn industry-recognized workforce credentials while simultaneously being enrolled in GED classes, giving them the tools they need for gainful employment and a brighter future.
The program also earned recognition for its exceptional work with SNAP recipients. Sumter Adult Education offers additional services and counseling for SNAP recipients enrolled in the program, helping to support their educational and employment goals.
Dr. Vanessa Smith-Canty, Sumter Adult Education director, expressed her pride in the school's accomplishments.
"I am elated to be recognized for all of our school's hard work. Graduating nearly 100 students is a big deal. These are people's lives that we're changing," she said.
Lead teacher Dr. Austin Floyd echoed her sentiments.
"My teachers and I have gone above and beyond to help both day and evening students achieve their educational goals. We are incredibly proud of our students and what they accomplish in the Sumter community," he said.
