Sumter Behavioral Health holding prescription drug drop-off Tuesday

If you have unused or expired prescription pills, liquids or other medications in your home and do not know what to do with them, Sumter Behavioral Health has an answer.

The organization is hosting a prescription drug drop-off from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at the Sumter YMCA, 510 Miller Road.

Also on hand will be free Deterra packets for at-home disposal. According to deterrasystem.com, the safe Deterra Drug Deactivation System includes a pouch made from material containing organic additives that are consumed by microbes found in landfills which causes the plastic pouch to degrade. The result is the release of water and carbon dioxide, with little organic biomass left behind, greatly reducing the amount of material left in landfills.

Also available at the drop-off will be a limited amount of free NARCAN. NARCAN is used for the treatment of an opioid emergency or a possible opioid overdose.

According to narcan.com, someone overdoses on opioids approximately every 11 minutes.
