A vaccination event will be held at Liberty STEAM Charter School on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 15 School St. in Sumter.

The newly and fully FDA-approved Pfizer vaccine will be available for anyone aged 12 and older.

Only 34% of Sumter County is fully vaccinated, according to data from the state public health department.

According to data from Prisma Health, there were 436 people with COVID-19 hospitalized throughout its system, which includes hospitals in the Upstate and Midlands, including Sumter's Tuomey, as of Aug. 26. That's about 100 more than the peak reached last summer and about 100 less than the record high reached in January.

On July 2, there were only 12 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Prisma hospitals.

Of the 436, 410 are unvaccinated. Of the 96 in the ICU, 91 are unvaccinated, and 52 of the 54 COVID-19 patients on ventilators are unvaccinated.
