National Voter Registration Day is Tuesday, and the Sumter County League of Women Voters will be doing its part.

League President Dee Woodward announced recently that the group will be out and about Tuesday at several local schools to assist people who want to register to vote or update their information if they have moved and want to change their address.

According to a news release, the local league will have voter registration tables at the three area colleges - Central Carolina Technical College, Morris College and the University of South Carolina Sumter - Crestwood High School, Lakewood High School, Sumter High School and Sumter County Adult Education, 905 N. Main St.

The league will assist people with registration online on their smart devices, Woodward said. Individuals must bring their South Carolina Driver's License or a South Carolina I.D. Registrants must also know their Social Security number, even though they don't necessarily have to bring their Social Security card, she said.

Registration can be completed within about five minutes, according to Woodward.

To register to vote, a person must be 18 and older, or an individual can currently be 17 and turn 18 within 30 days prior to the election.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, Mayesville and Pinewood residents will have the opportunity to vote in local elections. The mayoral seat and two town council seats are up for election in Mayesville. In Pinewood, one town council seat is up for vote after former councilman Jack Spann was voted in as mayor in a special election on Sept. 10.

Also, on Nov. 5 in Clarendon County, Turbeville residents will have the opportunity to vote for mayor and two town council seats. Councilwoman Kathryn Turbeville is the only candidate to file for the mayoral election. No incumbents chose to seek re-election on the town council.
