Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis traveled to the Statehouse yesterday to join several members of the South Carolina Sheriff's Association in presenting S.C. House Speaker Murrell Smith with the Legislative Champion Award.

This award recognizes legislators who seek input from their sheriffs and advocate for the law enforcement community. Smith, who represents Sumter's District 67, was recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the concerns of South Carolina's sheriffs were expressed on various topics during the legislative session.

"The legislature passed several items this session that will have a profound impact on public safety," Executive Director Jarrod Bruder said.

Dennis, a past president of the Sheriff's Association, said he was thankful for the relationship his office has with Smith and to be a part of recognizing his service in this way.

"The citizens of Sumter County continue to benefit from the service of Speaker Smith," he said.
