The Sumter County Veterans Association will host two Memorial Day weekend events.

At 8 a.m. on Saturday, interested persons are invited to meet at the Agriculture Building on the Sumter County Fairgrounds, corner of Liberty Street and Artillery Drive, to participate in the placing of more than 4,500 flags on the gravesites of veterans. Participants are encouraged to bring a screwdriver to help loosen the ground to place the flag.

This year's Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the American Legion Post 15 on Artillery Drive. In previous years, the ceremony was held at Mabry Park, but because of construction of the new Veterans' Park, the event has been moved. Maj. Gen. Scott Zobrist, 9th Air Force commander, will speak. The public is invited to attend and remember the sacrifices of our deceased veterans.
