Sumter crime reports: Driving offenses, trespass notices, drug possessions

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office provided the following incident reports from Jan. 14-16.

The reports consist of driving offenses, trespass notices and possession of drugs.

JAN. 14

A Sumter man was arrested for possession of suspected drugs after being stopped for a traffic violation.

Kelly Rogers, 25, of Wilma Court, was reportedly speeding down Dorsey Drive at about 7:50 p.m. when deputies conducted a traffic stop.

While making contact with Rogers, deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Rogers was asked to step out of the vehicle while deputies conducted a search of the vehicle.

In the center console, a clear plastic bag containing multicolored pills was found, weighing approximately 40 grams.

Rogers was arrested for possession of suspected drugs and was transported to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.

A Sumter man was arrested for driving offenses, possession of marijuana and misrepresenting identity during a traffic stop.

At about 11:20 p.m., deputies observed a 2016 black Toyota Camry traveling eastbound on Broad Street at a high rate of speed.

While initiating a traffic stop, the vehicle pulled into the main entrance of American Mobile Home Park.

According to the report, the vehicle continued to move until it came to an abrupt stop, and the deputy witnessed the car rock back and forth as the driver and passenger switched places.

Deputies made contact with the original driver, Jonathan Williams, 34, of Branch Street, who identified himself as Jonathan Martin.

Williams was detained after he said he didn't have a driver's license, but he had a state-issued ID card that was not with him at the time.

Deputies checked Williams' information through South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and were unable to locate anything on the name Jonathan Martin.

During the traffic stop, deputies also noticed the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and conducted a vehicle search. Two open bottles of liquor, one on the back seat and the other in the center console, and a small bag of suspected marijuana were recovered from the vehicle.

Deputies also discovered a wallet in the vehicle that contained a Social Security card that had Williams' name on it. A check of that name showed that Sumter County had six outstanding general sessions bench warrants for him. A check of his driver's license also showed that he had a third-offense driver suspension and was a habitual offender.

Williams was arrested for the driving offenses, possession of marijuana, misrepresenting identity, habitual offender, third-offense driving suspension and six general sessions bench warrants. He was transported to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.

JAN. 15

Torrek Wright, 18, of Hanover Court, was arrested for reckless driving after he failed to stop at a driver's license checkpoint and driving away in a reckless manner.

While conducting a driver's license checkpoint at the intersection of Alice Drive and Harper Street about 2:30 a.m., deputies observed a gray Hyundai Sonata fail to stop at the checkpoint.

Wright fled from the checkpoint and made a right onto Harper Street, accelerating at a high rate of speed. He then disregarded the stop sign at Harper Street and U.S. 521, making a right onto U.S. 521 and a left onto South Pike Road.

Deputies were able to catch up to Wright after he decreased speed and pulled over near Market Street.

Wright, who told deputies he fled the checkpoint because he was "scared," was arrested. A 20-year-old passenger was detained.

Deputies smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the suspect's vehicle, but did not locate any in the search.

The 20-year-old was released without charges, while Wright was transported to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.

JAN. 16

A Florence man was arrested after driving under suspension, providing an improper vehicle license and operating an uninsured vehicle.

At 1:45 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on Myrtle Beach Highway after observing a red Chevrolet that appeared to have been recently spray painted. After running the vehicle license, deputies confirmed it was a suspended Mercedes.

The driver, Michael Dean Davis Jr., 22, of Florence, reportedly told deputies that he did not have a driver's license or vehicle insurance.

After running Davis' information, his license came back with a second-offense suspension. The vehicle license came back as suspended under another owner.

Davis was apprehended for the driving offenses and transported to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.

A Sumter woman was arrested after allegedly trespassing onto a 51-year-old man's property.

Candace Hudson, 28, of Christine Drive, was on trespass notice at the 51-year-old's residence on Caroland Drive.

At about 9:30 p.m., deputies arrived and apprehended Hudson. She was transported to Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center without further incident.
