Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident after suspects fled from a vehicle, leaving behind an infant.

At about 10 p.m. on Monday, a deputy observed a vehicle with only one working headlight on U.S. 378. The deputy attempted to make a routine traffic stop, but the vehicle pulled onto a side road before the driver and passengers fled from the rolling vehicle, according to Mark Bordeaux, public information officer for the sheriff’s office. Deputies were able to detain one passenger, a minor, and the vehicle continued to roll until it struck bushes.

Additional deputies arrived on scene and discovered an infant strapped into a car seat in the back seat of the vehicle. The infant was taken from the vehicle and “appeared to be in good condition,” Bordeaux said.

The Department of Social Services was contacted and assisted in returning the child to its mother. Investigators learned that the child had been under the care of a babysitter, Bordeaux said.

An investigation is ongoing by the sheriff’s office with assistance from the Department of Social Services.
