Sumter Dixie Junior Boys, Boys win state tourney openers

BLUFFTON - The Sumter Dixie Junior Boys all-star baseball team defeated North Augusta 8-1 on Saturday in its opening game of the state tournament at Oscar Frazier Park.

Sumter will face Lancaster today at 9 a.m. in a winners bracket game in the 10-team tournament.

Clark Kinney, Chase Denton and Blake VanPatten combined to limit North Augusta to one hit while striking out eight.

Kinney and Denton both had two hits and two runs batted in. Dylan Jones and Jes Schwedler both scored two runs.

BLUFFTON - The Sumter Dixie Boys all-star baseball team defeated North Augusta 13-0 in four innings on Saturday in its opening game of the state tournament at Oscar Frazier Park.

Sumter will face Chester on Sunday at 3 p.m. in a winners bracket game in the 10-team tournament.

Sumter finished with 10 hits, three of them coming from Wynn Brogdon. One of those was a double, and Brogdon finished with three RBI.

Dylan Richardson, TJ Curlee and Cameron Coulter each had a double. Jackson Brown had a hit, three runs and two RBI, while Cameron Baker had a hit and two RBI.

Curlee, Richardson and Coulter each scored two runs.

Wyatt Meldrim and Dubose Rembert combined on a 1-hit shutout. Each worked two innings.

Mariners' Leake loses perfect game in 9th

SEATTLE - Mike Leake of the Seattle Mariners lost his bid to pitch a perfect game on a leadoff single in the ninth inning by rookie Luis Rengifo, then finished off the Los Angeles Angels for a 10-0 win Friday night.

A week after the worst start of his career, Leake almost achieved baseball immortality.

The Angels hadn't come close to a hit and Leake hadn't gone to a three-ball count before Rengifo grounded a clean hit to right field on Leake's 79th pitch.

The fans gave Leake a standing ovation and he quickly waved to acknowledge their cheers.

After a walk, Leake (8-8) retired the next three batters for a one-hitter, striking out Mike Trout on a full-count pitch to end it. Leake fanned six overall and walked one.

NEW YORK - The Yankees are as hot as the weather, torching Colorado pitching for the second straight day.

Edwin Encarnaci n chased Anthony Senzatela with a two-run double in a five-run second inning, and New York romped over the Rockies 11-5 Saturday for its fifth straight win.

On an afternoon with a 94-degree gametime temperature, the highest for the Yankees this season, New York went ahead when Aaron Judge doubled in a run on Senzatela's 10th pitch and took a 9-0 lead by the fourth.

Clanton, Suwannapura win LPGA event

MIDLAND, Mich. - Cydney Clanton and Jasmine Suwannapura ran away with the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational on Saturday, shooting an 11-under 59 in best-ball play for a six-stroke victory.

Clanton and Suwannapura took a five-shot lead into the final round after shooting an alternate-shot 63 on Friday at Midland Country Club in the LPGA Tour's first-year team event. They finished at 27-under 253.
