Four Sumter Fire Department stations reported to a kitchen fire at Palmetto Towers, a subsidized senior living facility at 1150 S. Pike West, Friday evening.
The blaze started about 4:56 p.m. and was contained in the kitchen on the first floor of the facility, but the exhaust fan in the kitchen pulled the smoke up to the floors above the room and stayed within those areas of the facility, said Division Chief Joey Duggan.
No injuries were immediately reported. Duggan said the fire caused $2,500 in damage and $1,000 loss of contents and was contained to a single apartment.
The Sumter Fire Department Headquarters, Alice Drive Station, Thomas Sumter Station and Stadium Road Station all responded to the fire and controlled the blaze by 5:05 p.m., Duggan said.
Residents of Palmetto Towers were safely moved to the stairwells and out of the facility.
