Sumter High School's upcoming musical is a classic for all ages to enjoy.

This year, the students themselves chose to perform Bright Star, a musical set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in 1945-46 with flashbacks to 1923. It is full of heartbreak and redemption.

Kelly Melton, fine arts and drama teacher at Sumter High School, said the students chose to perform Bright Star because they loved the music and its bluegrass feel.

The three lead roles will be played by L.G. Wylie, senior; Josiah Johnson, senior; and CJ Waters, sophomore. About 51 students are involved on stage and backstage for the production.

The musical will take place at the Sumter High School Auditorium, 2580 McCrays Mill Road, from Jan. 29 through Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. and on Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. General admission is $10 at the door.
