Sumter investigators seek information after non-fatal shooting on Monday

Sumter Police Department responded to a shooting Monday afternoon that left a man injured.

Officers and Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Shannon/Red and White streets area about 12:30 pm. after gunfire was heard.

According to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the police department, near the Shannon and Red and White streets intersection was a vehicle with a 22-year-old Sumter man inside with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital before being transferred to a Columbia hospital; his condition is unknown.

Officers also found at least four houses, three of which were occupied, that were struck by gunfire. There were no injuries reported, McGirt said.

The police department is continuing to gather information that can help identify the shooter or shooters and determine what led to the incident. Anyone who might have seen or heard anything or can provide descriptions of vehicles or people in the area before or after the shooting is asked to call (803) 436-2700.
