Sumter man, 34, arrested for requesting obscene photos of 14-year-old girl, sexual acts

A 34-year-old man was denied bond after being accused of sending explicit photos to a 14-year-old girl and asking for photos of her in return.

Jason Darnell Smoot, of Hwy. 260, was arrested Friday on charges of criminal solicitation of a minor, first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and unlawful dissemination of obscene material to a person under 18 years of age, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

A warrant states that the suspect also reportedly asked the victim "several times to sneak out of her parents' residence" on Joyce Street in Sumter "through the window for the purpose of meeting up to engage in sexual acts."

Smoot remains in the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center. A booking photo was not available as of press time.
