A Sumter man is in police custody after reportedly exposing himself outside of a daycare last week.

According to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department, a mother was returning to her car when she heard a man make a comment. When she turned to see who and where the voice was coming from, she noticed the man was exposed.

He drove off as the mother went back inside to inform daycare staff of what happened.

Officers were able to identify the vehicle seen in the parking lot and later located the driver, Andrew Tarell Devon Wheeler, 32, of Sumter. He was charged with indecent exposure and booked at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, McGirt said. The name of the daycare was not released.

An investigation is ongoing.
