Qwantise Abrams, 32, of South Guignard Drive, was pronounced dead on the scene of a three-vehicle crash Friday night on North Lafayette Drive, according to Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker.

Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department, said the crash happened at about 7:30 p.m. Friday on North Lafayette Drive between East Charlotte Avenue and Loring Drive.

A 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, turning left onto Lafayette from the Dollar General parking lot, was struck by one of two motorcycles headed north. Abrams' motorcycle hit the driver's side of the SUV causing the other motorcycle to spill. According to Baker, Abrams was not wearing a helmet.

The other motorcyclist, who likely suffered injuries, fled on foot and has not been identified, said McGirt.

McGirt said the driver of the SUV, Darrell Bennett, 26, of Dalzell, and one passenger suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital. Lewis Green, 29, of Sumter, remains in the hospital but is expected to recover. A rear seat passenger of the SUV was transported by helicopter to a Columbia hospital.

In addition to investigating the cause of the wreck, Sumter police are looking for the motorcyclist who fled the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sumter Police Department at (803) 436-2700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
