Sumter man suspected of robbing woman at gunpoint in custody

A Sumter man who was wanted for reportedly robbing a woman at gunpoint early Monday was taken into custody without incident on Thursday, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department. 

Sharell Wells, 27, of Cambridge Drive, was wanted for armed robbery, first-degree assault and battery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and unlawful carrying of a pistol, according to the police department.

The incident happened at about 11 a.m. in the parking lot of a Lafayette Drive apartment complex and remains under investigation.
