The progress and promise of a community lie in the hands of those who put their heart into helping its people, and Brothers Incorporated wants to shine a spotlight on them.

The Sumter nonprofit returns with another community event, The Dream Team, on Monday, Jan. 20, at Westend Community Church.

In observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the hometown organization seeks to recognize a new generation of leadership while paying respect to community leaders who have dedicated their lives to service in Sumter.

A panel of local leaders consists of those who have demonstrated both leadership and the ability to influence a culture equipped to change the narrative of Sumter. The panel will include Sumter School Board Vice Chairman Brian Alston, Jabaar Carmack, Courts 2 College founder Artrelle Felder, Albert "Beazo" Kelly, WarCry organizer Cheryl Johnson McKnight, Jeanetta Potts and David Witherspoon.

"This group has impacted our community spiritually, politically, economically and socially, and we strive to amplify their voices," said Jason Johnson, member of Brothers Incorporated.

The nonprofit will also honor the leadership and service of Daisy Moore, the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty and other pillars of the community. By highlighting their contributions, Brothers Incorporated hopes to encourage others to follow in the footsteps that have been laid.

The event is free and will begin at noon at Westend, 101 S. Salem Ave.
