Sumter officer suffers minor injury after 'accidental' discharge of firearm at detention center

An officer with Sumter Police Department suffered a minor injury after an "accidental discharge" of his duty gun. 

According to Tonyia McGirt, the incident occurred after 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 27, at Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. The officer, whose name was not released, was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and later released, McGirt said.

McGirt told The Item  while the circumstances are being reviewed, it did not stem from an active situation at the detention center. 

The incident is under review by Sumter County Sheriff's Office and Sumter Police Department.
