Sumter P-15's get past Florence 6-4 Monday; Tuesday's game postponed

FLORENCE – The Sumter P-15’s remained undefeated on the season with a 6-4 American Legion baseball victory over Florence Post 1 on Monday at American Legion Field.

Sumter improved to 6-0 on the season and 5-0 in League II.

The teams were scheduled to play again on Tuesday at Riley Park, but the game was called due to rain with Sumter leading 1-0 in the top of the second.

Each team scored two runs in the first inning, but the P-15’s picked up a single run in the third to go up 3-2. Sumter made it 5-2 with two runs in the fifth only to be matched by Florence in the bottom of the inning.

Sumter got an insurance in the sixth and held on for the win in the bottom of the seventh.

In the top of the first, Sumter took the 2-0 lead. Losing pitcher Timmy Felder hit leadoff batter Jacob Holladay then walked Chandler Hunter. Each one of them scored on groundouts by groundouts by SB DuCom and Trent Frye, respectively.

Florence got the runs back against Sumter starting pitcher Josh Bryant. However, Bryant held Post 1 over the next three innings before being touched for two in the fifth. Still, Bryant picked up the win, allowing four hits and five walks while striking out two.

Holladay scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 3-2. Frye delivered a 2-run single in the fifth to make it 5-2.

Jackson Hoshour scored on a fielder’s choice in the sixth to make it 6-4.

Florence stranded runners at the corners in the sixth against reliever Drake Thames.

In the seventh, Florence loaded the bases with no outs against reliever Dustin Kennedy. However, Kennedy induced a pop out and a double play to close out the game and keep Sumter undefeated.

Frye had three runs batted in. Holladay had a hit and scored three runs, while Hunter had a hit and scored twice. Wylie Coker had a hit and an RBI, and Hoshour had a hit and a run.
