Sumter P-15's split 2 games in Challenge

NEWBERRY - The Sumter P-15's American Legion baseball team split its two games in the North Carolina-South Carolina Challenge on Sunday at Newberry College's Smith Road Complex.

Sumter lost to Randolph County, North Carolina, 10-5 in the opener before shutting out Shelby, North Carolina, 8-0 in the nightcap.

Against Randolph County, the game was tied 1-1 after three innings before Post 45 exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth inning. The P-15's scored twice in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-3. The score remained the same until Randolph County scored three times in the seventh.

Sumter, which is now 7-2 on the season, outhit Post 45 11-7 with six of the hits coming from two players. Trent Frye was 3-for-4, missing hit for the cycle by a home run. Along with his double and triple, he had two runs batted in and scored a run. Jacob Holladay was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs.

SB DuCom had two hits, including a double, with an RBI, Dustin Kennedy had a double and an RBI, and Tray Yates had a double.

Cody Windham took the loss. He pitched 3-plus innings, allowing five runs, four hits and two walks.

In the second game, the P-15's broke open a 1-0 game with four runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth to go on to the 8-0 win.

Drake Thames led the Sumter offense with a double, three RBI and two runs. Jackson Hoshour had two hits, two walks, two stolen bases, an RBI and a run, Corey Blackley had two hits, a run and an RBI, Frye had a double and a run, and Wylie Coker had a double and an RBI.

Kennedy, Chandler Hunter and Thames combined on a 4-hit shutout. Kennedy pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits while striking out five and walking none. Hunter pitched two hitless innings while walking one and striking out one. Thames allowed a hit and got all three of his outs via strikeout.

Sumter plays host to Florence on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Riley Park. This is the makeup for a game that was rained out two weeks ago.

The P-15's will then play host to a portion of the Palmetto Invitational at Riley Park beginning on Thursday. Sumter will play Moorefield, Virginia, at 7 p.m.

The P-15'swill face Pitt County, North Carolina, on Friday at 7:30 p.m., Concord, North Carolina, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and Greenwood at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. It will play a team to be determined on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Junior P-15's split

The Sumter Junior P-15's split two games last week, losing to Manning-Santee Post 68 on Thursday at Riley Park before beating Hartsville 6-4 on Friday, also at Riley Park.

In the Thursday contest, Manning scored a run in the top of the first and two more in the seventh to go up 3-0. Sumter scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

Austin Trapp worked all seven innings for the Junior P-15's, giving up just three hits while striking out four. Jackson Campbell worked six innings to get the win for Post 68. Cam Branham pitched the seventh and got the save.

Bryce Acord had a hit, a walk and two RBI for Manning. Austin Geddings added a hit and an RBI.

Tyler Jones had an RBI for Sumter.

Against Hartsville, Sumter rallied from a 4-2 deficit to get the win.

Jones had two hits, while Clayton Goff and Trapp both had two RBI.

Sumter is 5-3-1 overall.
