The Sumter Police Department is offering $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons involved in a shooting that left one dead and another injured.

On Sept. 20 at about 10:45 p.m., officers responded to a shots-fired call in the area of Brand Street – between Penn Street and Royal Avenue near Lafayette Drive. A Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputy near the area answered the call and found a man, who had been shot, lying in the roadway on Brand Street, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the police department.

Paul Shereshaw, 42, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, where he died a short time later, McGirt said. As officers investigated, another man, 26, of Sumter, arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound. It was determined that man was shot while standing nearby as gunfire began; he is recovering at home, McGirt said. An unoccupied car parked in the area was also hit by gunfire.

Officers are continuing to investigate and ask anyone who might have seen or heard anything around the time of the shooting to call the Sumter Police Department at (803) 436-2700.

Information needed would include descriptions of people or vehicles in the area or sounds, such as people talking, arguing, gunfire, etc.
