Sumter school board has gone in wrong direction with Mayewood reopening

Posted

I would like to express my reactions to the school board's vote to reopen Mayewood school. I am so glad you published the names of those who voted to reopen because I intend to keep their names available to me. I have recently returned to Sumter to live and will be voting whenever I have the opportunity. I have taught school 38 years in many places, including Europe with the military children, and am very concerned with children getting the education they need.

Recently, Sumter has had its financial problems, and just when they were trying to get back on track, these people have voted to go in the wrong direction and reopen Mayewood. Why? Do they not care about where the money is coming from, how this will affect money needed for other beneficial things?

Please try to get this vote overturned and get things back on track. The children involved should get a better education, and many others will benefit. I did not teach in Sumter, but I received my initial education in elementary, junior high and Edmunds High, and the school system was great when I graduated in 1952. Let's straighten this mess out and make Sumter a community we can be proud to be a part of.
