Sumter school board to discuss state department financial recommendations

Sumter School District's Board of Trustees will review specific state Department of Education recommendations on the district's new budget recovery plan for next year at its board meeting Monday night.

A district spokeswoman made the agenda available to the media and public on Friday, and board chairman the Rev. Ralph Canty spoke.

After the state Board of Education denied the district/trustees' financial plan last month that included $295,000 for the reopening of Mayewood Middle School, district administration and the state Department of Education have been back and forth in correspondence with questions and answers on next year's budget.

The district has received a state department letter with four recommendations for the new budget, and administration has forwarded those recommendations to board members, but they haven't discussed them yet. That will happen Monday at the board meeting, Canty said.

The chairman said he had not personally reviewed the state department's financial recommendations, as of Friday afternoon, and couldn't discuss any of them yet.

He said the nine-member board will discuss the Mayewood situation, based on the state's recommendations.

Monday's meeting will start with a one-hour executive session behind closed doors where trustees will discuss with legal counsel the district's current status in a fiscal emergency declaration.

Open session for the board meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m.

The monthly board meeting will be at Lakewood High School's media center, 350 Old Manning Road. Like all board-related meetings, the public is welcome to attend, and public participation is also listed on the agenda.

Additionally, the trustees will recognize the Lemira Elementary School Golden Steppers, the agenda states.
