Sumter shooting suspect receives $55,000 bond
Daundre Wilson, the second suspect in the nonfatal Christmas shooting at the El Cheapo on U.S. 378, was given a $55,000 bond during a first appearance hearing at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on Wednesday.
Wilson, 21, is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime for allegedly shooting another man in the lower body during an altercation outside of the Broad Street convenience store.
Ken Bell, public information officer for the sheriff's office, said Wilson, of Highland Avenue in Sumter, was arrested without incident at an apartment complex in Columbia on Tuesday and taken into custody of the sheriff's office that evening.
According to Sumter County Sheriff's Office, Wilson and a co-defendant, 17-year-old Faquanta Benjamin, had a verbal altercation with the victim inside the store about 6:30 p.m. and the altercation escalated when the three men went outside.
During Benjamin's first appearance hearing, Sgt. Wayne DuBose with the sheriff's office said an investigation indicates Wilson pulled out a firearm and shot the 20-year-old victim, leaving him in serious but stable condition.
Benjamin and Wilson fled the area after the incident, he said.
Bell said the victim has been released from the hospital but could return for more treatment.
On Wednesday, he said, judge Fred Gordon set a $55,000 surety bond for Wilson: $50,000 for the attempted murder charge and $5,000 for possession of a weapon of a violent crime.
If he makes bond and is released from jail, Bell said Wilson will be required to wear GPS monitoring; avoid contact with the victim and his family; and cannot possess a firearm.
Benjamin, charged with attempted murder, was arrested on Dec. 26 after he turned himself in.
Gordon set a $50,000 surety bond and required a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and GPS monitoring device upon Benjamin's release.
He was also ordered to avoid contact with the victim and his family.
