Sumter still No. 5 in 5A despite close victory

Despite having its closest game of the season on Friday, undefeated Sumter High School remained No. 5 among 5A schools in the S.C. Prep Media Football Poll released on Tuesday.

In fact, the top six spots in the 5A rankings remained the same. Dutch Fork remained the unanimous No. 1, as it has all season, followed by undefeated Dorman and Fort Dorchester and once beaten Byrnes.

The Gamecocks, who held on to defeat Spring Valley 30-28, improve to 8-0 on the season and win the Region IV title, stayed in front of undefeated Clover.

The final four in 5A changed a bit. Once-beaten Carolina Forest moved from eighth to seventh, while once-beaten Laurens moved into the poll for the first time at No. 8 after beating previously ranked T.L. Hanna. Gaffney moved up a spot to No. 9, while River Bluff dropped from seventh to 10th after losing.

Sumter remains the only South Carolina High School League local team to be ranked. Three local SCISA teams are ranked, and only one of them changed position in their respective polls.

Robert E. Lee jumped from third to second in the 2A poll after No. 1 Trinity-Byrnes routed previous No. 3 Florence Christian School. REL travels to Darlington to face T-B on Friday.

FCS is in a tie for third with Hilton Head Christian.

Laurence Manning Academy remains second in the 3A poll behind unanimous No. 1 Hammond. Clarendon Hall maintained its spot at No. 4 in the 8-man poll.

Myrtle Beach in 4A, Chapman in 3A and Abbeville in 2A all remain as unanimous No. 1 teams. The only SCHSL poll that isn't unanimous is 1A. Wagener-Salley held on to the No. 1 spot, garnering eight first-place votes to four for No. 2 and defending state champion Green Sea-Floyds.

Andrew Jackson is a unanimous No. 1 in the SCISA 8-man poll. In the 1A poll, Bethesda Academy is No. 1 for the second straight week, picking up four first-place votes to two for second-ranked Carolina Academy.
