Sumter Today: We do Christmas, the Carolina Backcountry way

Posted

The Sumter County Museum opened its gates last weekend to show patrons what it might have been like to celebrate the Christmas season in the early 19th century in Backcountry of the South Carolina. Guests mingled with volunteers clad in period dress while they sipped hot spiced cider, visited with a colonial Santa Claus, played games, learned a bit about weaving and wood carving and even roasted chestnuts on an open fire.
