Sumter Today: Law enforcement marks National Police Week by remembering one of their own

Posted

National Police Week is May 10th through the 16th, and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office unfortunately had a somber way to remember the year.

They gathered at the Sumter County Judicial Center on Tuesday for an unveiling ceremony that revealed Cpl. Andrew Gillette’s name on the Sumter County Law Enforcement Memorial Monument.

Gillette was killed in the line of duty on February 25 when he and two other deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice.

The ceremony was attended by law enforcement officers and Gillette’s family, and his wife was presented with a show of support from the Sumter community and those she doesn’t even know.
