Sumter Today: Churches band together to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic

The parking lot at Wayman Chapel AME Church played host to a partnership on Saturday that put food in people’s homes.

The USDA has partnered with South Carolina AME Sumter District to help distribute 1,100 40-pound boxes of food, produce and meat products through their network of 26 churches to people still being impacted by the pandemic.

The USDA restarted the Farmers to Families Food Box Program in January after purchasing an additional $1.5 billion dollars worth of food for nationwide distribution, and we stopped by on Saturday to learn more.
