Public schools in Sumter will begin their school year this fall how last school year ended. At home. Sumter School District’s Board of Trustees unanimously agreed on Monday night to approve Superintendent Penelope Martin-Knox’s recommendation to begin school on Aug. 17 with virtual, online instruction. The recommendation came with athletics still in limbo, with no date set yet for when practices and workouts can start. According to a state education department spokesperson, Sumter is the first district in the state to make an official decision on the fall term, and district officials pointed to DHEC’s data that show Sumter is a high-risk community.
