Sumter Today: Sumter’s longest-serving mayor is recognized for his service to the city

Joe McElveen retired last fall after serving as mayor for 20 years, which is the longest time anyone has served as mayor in Sumter.
The city threw him a retirement party last night at La Piazza in downtown Sumter to thank him for his vision and leadership through those years.
City department leaders got up to thank him for the accomplishments he helped implement and awarded him with mementos and certificates.
It all led up to members of Sumter County’s legislative delegation presenting McElveen with a proclamation from Congressman Clyburn and a special award from Gov. Henry McMaster that represents the highest civilian award that can be given by the state.
